Console yourself

I remember getting very frustrated by Piranha Plants as a kid. I’d try to swing Mario through the jungle only to be chomped up and have to start again. It made me cross, but then I’d keep trying until I reached the flag.

Now games have levelled up to a whole new world of pain. It’s not just the game you need to beat, but the other players. Online gaming can be massively frustrating but also great fun. It draws players in with promises of great loot and character skins – and quick respawns keep you coming back again and again.

My house is full of gamers and I can see exactly why they want to play. But sometimes the frustration gets too much and, when controllers start to fly, I find myself calling time on it.

My son would play on his Xbox all day if he could – but where should I draw the line? I decided to ask the experts.
